Meet Our Oral Surgeon

Dr. Steven R. Schimmele, DDS, FACS is a Fort Wayne native and was schooled at St. Vincent DePaul grade school and Bishop Dwenger High School. His family has long roots in the Fort Wayne area, he is proud of his home community, and he and his wife, Heather, feel blessed to be a part of Fort Wayne. Dentistry runs deep in the family as Heather is a certified dental assistant. There is also another dentist, dental hygienist, dental lab technician and dental student in the immediate family!

Dr. Schimmele attended both Indiana University, Bloomington and IPFW for undergraduate education. He was accepted to the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1988 and subsequently graduated in 1992. He graduated with honors (top 10%of his class) and was honored with multiple awards including the Johnson Public Health Dentistry Scholarship, Pierre Fauchard Academy Certificate of Merit, Indiana Dental Association special honor award for leadership in Dentistry, and the Glenn J Pell Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Oral Surgery to name a few. After graduation he attended the University of Cincinnati for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency where he was trained in all aspects of medicine and surgery. During residency, Dr. Schimmele studied many aspects of health care in depth including adult and pediatric anesthesia, emergency medicine, general surgery, family medicine and plastic surgery.

After residency Dr. Schimmele had the honor of serving as the Fellow in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Center for Tumor and Reconstructive Surgery under the direction of Dr. Robert E Marx and Dr. Eric R Carlson, two well known leaders in the field. During his tenure as Fellow he was immersed in the concepts and practice of treating benign and malignant pathology of the maxillofacial complex along with the reconstruction of complicated bone and soft tissue defects of the region. It was during his fellowship that he became trained in advanced procedures for some of the most difficult anatomic problems involving the face and jaws. He is happy to bring those skills to the region to provide the most advanced care to our residents.

Science and academic progress have always been an interest to Dr. Schimmele as he has lectured across the country to various groups, Universities and associations. He has been published as author or co-author in seven different peer reviewed journals and was a peer reviewer for the journal “Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology”. Dr. Schimmele most recently became one of the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Indiana to be admitted to the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Schimmele has been professionally active in multiple local, state and national organizations. He has been involved on committees at all the local hospitals helping these organizations provide the best care possible to the community. He has held various positions in dental societies including the Isaak Knaap District Dental Society, The Indiana Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Indiana component of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the Indiana Dental Association. Nationally he has been a board member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and a member of the Committee on Anesthesia for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His most rewarding position was helping direct an annual simulation course for the AAOMS teaching emergency response techniques for anesthetic emergencies.

Service to the community is considered natural to the Schimmeles. Both Steve and Heather are very active in the community and regularly volunteer their time for various local charities. Board and committee positions at St Elizabeth Catholic grade school, Bishop Dwenger High School, the Fort Wayne South Bend Diocese, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, the Carriage House and Matthew 25 have been some of their favorite experiences. All these organizations help to make our community better by supporting its people in a number of ways.
